EDGING STONE APPLICATIONS

The uses for edging stones are practically limitless. You can use them to border the landscaping or hardscaping details you already have in your backyard or commercial space. Think creatively, and you’ll find plenty of other uses for edging stones in your landscaping and beyond.

Some common ideas to get you started on your yard project include:

  • Flower beds: Placing edging stones around the perimeter of your flower beds is a wonderful way to add some definition to an already statement-making feature. Stones are doubly useful, as they’ll also help keep dirt and mulch in place.
  • Gardens: To add a solid structure you’ll be inspired to use year after year, place edging stones around your garden.
  • Driveways: Placing edging stones around your driveway is a stately way to define its perimeter. You can choose stones to match the ones already in your driveway or opt for a bit of contrast.
  • Other landscaping ideas: With yard edging stones, the possibilities are endless. Edging stones can line the perimeter of your grass to keep it from expanding to unwanted areas. Or, you can use edging stones to create paths and walkways you’ll enjoy for years to come.

EDGING STONE COLOR OPTIONS

When choosing a stone color to complement your outdoor environment, you have several options to choose from. You may want to coordinate with stone colors you already have in your yard or add a bit of contrast with another earth tone. Colors to consider include:

  • Limestone: A classic yard feature, limestone offers neutral tones with striking dark stripes, great for adding a bold touch while blending with the rest of your space.
  • Sandstone: If you’re looking for a statement stone, sandstone’s bright, contrasting tones will surely fit the bill. Or, soften its look by placing it near flowers or greenery.
  • Earthen stone: The subtle, versatile colors in this stone will look at home anywhere in your yard or commercial landscaping. Whether you choose to highlight the light or dark brown details, earthen stone will provide a solid feature for your space.

EDGING STONE INSTALLATION

Edging stones are easy to install, and you can usually finish a border project in less than a day. Here are some tips to help you get started on your next project:

  • Plan your space: Before you get to work, make sure you know exactly where you want to place your stones. Planning in advance will let you know how many stones you’ll need and make it easier to install the edging stones quickly and neatly.
  • Buy your stones: Determine the exact size, color and style you want your stones to be. There are many types to choose from, and the ones you pick should reflect the size and shape of the space you’re working with. You may also want to choose edging stone materials based on how durable they’ll need to be to withstand the weather in your area.
  • Gather your tools: Laying edging stones requires a little digging, and the good news is, you most likely already have the tools you need. Round up a few large and small shovels for initial digging and more detailed work and some extra soil to fill in the space around the stones. You’ll also want to get some gravel to use as the base of the trenches you dig to make a sturdy drainage layer for the edging stones to rest on.
  • Take your time: When installed properly, your edging stone creation can last a long time. That’s why it’s important to dig an accurate trench then align and place the stones carefully to ensure they all fit together. Especially when placing the stones in or near grass, you’ll want to make sure you fit them as close together as possible to deter grass from growing in the cracks.
  • Dig the trenches: Dig the area you want to lay the edging stones in, using one of your stones as a guide so you only dig down as far as you need to. Try to dig to the same depth all the way around.
  • Lay the base gravel: The gravel will help your stone edging drain water and stay above ground. Only place a thin layer of gravel so you can still fit the stones in the trench and keep the natural look of the soil.
  • Lay the edging stones: Once your trenches are prepared, carefully lay the stones perpendicular to the ground.
  • Fill in the gaps: As you lay the stones, use your extra soil to fill in any spaces between the stones and the trench walls. This will ensure your stones stay in place.

EDGING STONE DEPTH

When digging the trenches for your edging stones, you want to dig far down enough that the surrounding soil will support the stones without digging too far down. The best rule of thumb is to dig so the bottom half of your edging stone is underground, while the top half sticks up above ground. Placing your stone halfway in the trench ensures it’ll stay in place while remaining a prominent, decorative feature.

Make sure your trenches are the same depth all the way around. Test a stone in the trench here and there to see if you’re still digging to that halfway mark.
